The bay of the Araya Peninsula is a destination in the state of Sucre, Venezuela, that has its charms. Friendly people and a refreshing ferry ride to get there from Cumaná make it an experience worth collecting. Very close to the main bay stands Araya Castle, or more formally “La Real Fortaleza de Santiago de Arroyo de Araya.” It lies in ruins and sees little tourist activity, but it is well worth a visit to take in the panorama of the place and to delight in the beautiful colors and landscapes the coast offers us. The trip from the port of Cumaná usually takes about an hour, including boarding and disembarking. On the beach, you are very likely to come across services offering sunshades and food at a very reasonable cost. Nearby, you also have the option of visiting the Araya salt flats and bringing back the typical block of salt from your trip.

How to get there?

You set out from the city of Cumaná; at the port you buy a ticket to Araya on the famous ferry “La Palita.” Once you reach the port of Araya, you only have to walk about 5 minutes and you will be at the bay near the castle. There are other bays farther away, but none with a greater array of inns, kiosks, and shops than this one, and with the unbeatable advantage of being practically next to the main port.
