Route to Isla de Coche

Isla de Coche is one of the most important tourist attractions of the state of Nueva Esparta in Venezuela. The layout of the island could be described as that of a desert, with an extensive beach of very white, fine sand on which most of the best-known hotels and inns are established, along with the restaurants and other tourist services. On occasion they offer tours around the whole island that include a trip through the salt flats, seashell graveyards, beaches, and other sectors of the island that are little known to tourists. One of the positive points of this destination is that it is quite safe, something that can be explained by the presence of few inhabitants. How to get there? There are two ways. For the first, you must land or disembark on Isla de Margarita; if you arrive by sea, you will most likely disembark at the port of Punta de Piedras, and from this town there is a ferry route covering the passage from Punta de Piedras to Isla de Coche; on the other hand, if you arrive by plane, you will then have to take a taxi to Punta de Piedras. The other way to arrive is through the state of Sucre in Venezuela; this route is very long and requires several hours on the road, from the city of Cumaná, the capital, to a town called Chacopata, from which small vessels depart that go directly to Isla de Coche. The ferry crossing to the island takes approximately an hour and a half. If you set out from other places, the journey can reach 5 or 6 hours. Cost? From Isla de Margarita, going to Isla de Coche is estimated overall at 7$ USD, which involves transport, food, and outings, provided it is a round-trip visit. If you plan to stay at an inn or a hotel, that rises to about 14$USD per night. If the journey you are planning does not set out from Isla de Margarita and involves travel by plane or by ferry from the mainland, then your adventure will probably fit a budget of 30$USD. What to bring? The sun in this area is unforgiving; to this you must also add that the sand is extremely white, so it is essential to bring sunscreen if you want to come back with skin after your time on the island. This goes hand in hand with bringing sunglasses to protect your eyes. In addition, bring light-colored clothing, snacks, and plenty of water.
