Route to Cabo Negro on Isla de Margarita

Cabo Negro Beach is a bay located in the vicinity of Playa el Agua. The journey from the latter beach is what makes the route special. You pass through at least about 3 small bays along a coastal trail from which beautiful views can be appreciated. Farther north, there is another path that sets out from the town of Manzanillo; this route is somewhat steeper and has some technical sections in which you will have to climb over rock in order to continue on the path, which makes it much longer. The route takes about 2 hours to complete, taking rest stops and including a swim at the beach. The curious thing about this bay is that it is a small isthmus, so instead of there being only one side, there are sides on which you can swim. The east coast tends to be a little warmer than the west, and depending on the time of year in which you visit it you may notice a greater presence of algae on one side or the other.

How to Get There?

There are two options. The first and most common is to set out from Playa el Agua; to reach Playa el Agua, if you do not have a private vehicle, you board a bus that departs from the city of Porlamar in the vicinity of Plaza Bolívar. This route crosses part of the city and travels along Avenida 31 de Julio to the town of Manzanillo. If, during your stay on Isla de Margarita, you are near Avenida 31 de Julio, you also have the option of waiting for the bus at some stop along that road. Playa el Agua lies before the town of Manzanillo, so you must be attentive. Once you begin the route, you will pass through the bays of Puerto Real and Playa la Cazonera; shortly after the latter, you will have to climb a hill among some cactus plants until, little by little, you come to make out the isthmus. If your adventure begins from the town of Manzanillo, a much longer route awaits you; once in the town there is a detour to the right, after crossing a few streets, that will connect you to a route whose initial destination is Playa la Propia. This route has steep descents and ascents, so you must be cautious, and a few meters from Playa la Propia you will have to climb some rocks in order to reach the bay. Once at Playa la Propia, continue the ascent until you reach Playa la Cazonera and turn left to finally reach Cabo Negro.

What to Bring?

A good-quality pair of sports shoes, plenty of sunscreen because the sun is relentless, and, of course, a swimsuit. 2 liters of water, preferably with ice.

Recommendations

Do the route between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., since exposure to the sun can cause heatstroke.
